Cub Lyon, who had won the 1960 Tecate endurance race, showed up at the 1961 event with this specially prepped Caretta running twin West Bend Five Port 700 engines, side mounterd fuel tanks, and a front mounted chain oiler. Cub took the lead on the first lap, but eventually retired with front end damage after an argument with haybales and curb. While running, it was the fastest on the course, opening up a big lead on early laps.
This kart might well best represent the forebody of what eventually came to be known as "enduro" karts. Carettas were manufactured by Ingels-Borelli; Art Ingels is also credited with having built the first kart ever.
